Superman Logo: Design And Evolution
Lately, we’ve made a tutorial on how to create the logo of one of the most popular superheroes in the world — Batman’s logo. And one day here in Vectr we thought it would be unfair to leave his greatest ally and worst enemy ( sure thing except for Joker ) behind. That day we decided to make a tutorial on Superman’s logo for you! 😉
Superman was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, two students living in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1933. But the society was able to meet him only 5 years later, 1938 in the Action Comics #1 drawn and written by Detective Comics also known as DC. Since then Superman appeared on various tv and radio serials, movies, tv programs, and video games. This guy served as an archetype for the definition “Superhero”.
Apparently, Superman’s logo as we know it now looked not from the beginning like that. It changed a lot and we will tell you about the logos from pop-appearances of Superman, from films and cartoons.
The first logo was a red “S” on the uncommon black background in Max Fleischer’s animated series 1941 - 1942.
There were no major changes till 1978. The first part of Richard Donner’s “Superman” was released and was well-rated by the critics and viewers.

Step 1
First of all, we need to create the basis for our logo. For that, we use the Pen tool which you may find in the left toolbar. If you ant your shape to be symmetrical you can create one part and mirror it with the help of the Workspace tools. These tools are also needed to merge them together.
Step 2
We need to set the color for the shape and for that we use the Background section which can be found in the right toolbar. There you can also change the size of the border and its color.
Step 3
The most difficult part of the design is to create the letter. We use the Pen tool for that. There are a variety of different ways to edit vector paths in your workspace. First, double-click on a path to begin editing. Check the GIF below to see how we create it. If you want to follow an easier way, just type the letter “s” using a proper font.
Step 4
Change the color of your shapes and their borders. As usual, use the right toolbar for that:)
Step 5
We also need to group everything together. Grouping layers in Vectr is quite simple and there are a couple of ways to do it. Simply right click the selected layers and click group or hold Shift and click on items at the same time and the objects will be automatically grouped. When your design is finished and ready to be exported, use the Export button. If you want to have a transparent background, export your file to PNG or SVG.
Now you have a great logo which will definitely look cool on t-shirts, for example! Check the tutorial on topic “How to design a logo for a t-shirt” here!
